Sony Xperia Z1 Compact launched at CES 2014

Even the flagships of the giant phone companies began with the small phone size and slowly trended to increase in size. As a result we got the 3.5 inch displays grow in size to 4, then 4.5, followed by 5, and even 6-6.5 inches of screen size for phones. Japanese electronics giant Sony has made an attempt to reverse the direction of the trending flow and squeezed its flagship mobile, the Sony Xperia Z1 into a smaller pocket friendly version, and named it the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact. The Sony Xperia Z1 Compact was unveiled today at the CES 2014 at Las Vegas along with its T-Mobile exclusive sibling, the Sony Xperia Z1S. The Sony Xperia Z1 Compact was earlier launched in the Japanese market as the Sony Xperia Z1F. The Xperia Z1 Compact is the international version of the Z1F. So what does it has to offer, lets learn them.

With the addition of Xperia Z1 Compact our global range of premium products is now broader than ever and offers our customers a wider choice. Xperia Z1 is a no-compromise feature-packed smartphone with a beautiful yet durable design. With Xperia Z1 Compact, we bring all of these premium features and performance, into a smaller size to give you the ultimate compact smartphone.”

Sony Xperia Z1 Compact: Key Features

The Sony Xperia Z1 Compact is a squeezed version of the premium flagship from Sony, the Xperia Z1. It sports a 4.3 inch TRILUMINOS™ HD Display for mobile, with the Bravia Engine, the technology that comes right from Sony’s range of LED televisions. As it is a smaller display, thus the display is 720p instead of 1080p full HD. But that is any way better on a screen size. The battery is reduced to 2300mAh as compared to the Z1’s 3000mAh powerhouse, but even considering the display size and quality of 341 ppi, this will be enough power bank for the Xperia Z1 compact.

Other than that, rest of the features are the same as were in Xperia Z1, which include Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 800 processor with 2.2 GHz quad-core CPU and 4G LTE facility, 2 gigabytes of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, external microSD card slot, a 20.7 Megapixel rear camera with LED Flash and a 2 megapixel front facing camera. A noticeable change is that this phone receives the IP55 & IP58 standards, which means that this phone is waterproof instead of being only water resistant. The Xperia Z1 Compact has the Adreno 330 GPU and comes out of the box with Android 4.3 JellyBean which is immediately upgradable to Android 4.4 Kitkat shortly.

Sony Xperia Z1 Compact: Price and Availability

Nothing has been revealed about the pricing and availability of the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact yet at the CES 2014 press event. However, this phone is certain to be cheaper than the flagship phone Xperia Z1 and the flagship phablet Xperia Z Ultra for obvious reasons. The Sony Xperia Z1 Compact will be available in four colors: Black, White, Pink and Lime (Yellow). It would however be interesting to see whether the customers can shift their interests from large display sizes to smaller ones.
